Clean Cities Top 20 Facts
More than 100,000 plug-in vehicles sold in the United States
In May of this year, cumulative sales of commercially available plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) surpassed the 100,000 mark.* The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has been tracking PEV sales, including those of all-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, since 2010. What was once a trickle has now gained significant momentum, as no fewer than 10 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are selling in volumes of a few dozen to thousands of vehicles per month.
To support this growth, the availability of charging infrastructure is also rapidly expanding. According to the Alternative Fueling Station Locator on the Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC), the number of charging units (or electric vehicle supply equipment, EVSE) available nationwide grew from 541 in 2010 to more than 18,000 today, at more than 7,800 locations. Working with stakeholders in their communities, Clean Cities coalitions were involved in establishing more than 4,700 of these units in 2012 alone. Coalitions have also been instrumental in helping communities prepare for the arrival of electric vehicles by streamlining permitting processes, educating code officials, training first responders, and educating the public.
