Clean Cities Top 20 Facts

Heavy-duty guide and search make it easy to explore alternative fuel options

Clean Cities offers a robust collection of tools and publications designed to inform decision makers and help stakeholders deploy alternative fuels and vehicles. One new publication is the Clean Cities Guide to Alternative Fuel and Advanced Medium- and Heavy-Duty VehiclesPDF.

Until recently, fleet managers looking for alternative-fuel vehicles or power systems had just a few options. Today, there are more than 160,000* medium- and heavy-duty alternative vehicles on the road, and a fleet manager’s options are numerous.

The guide can help navigate these options. It provides an overview of alternative fuel power systems (engines, microturbines, electric motors, and fuel cells) and hybrid propulsion systems. It also lists individual medium- and heavy-duty vehicle models by application, along with associated manufacturer contact information, fuel type, power source, and related information.

Online, see the Heavy-Duty Vehicle and Engine Search on the Alternative Fuels Data Center. This handy, interactive tool allows you to make side-by-side comparisons of vehicles, as well as engines, power sources, and hybrid propulsion systems. You can sort by application (such as vocational truck or transit bus), fuel, or manufacturer to see the breadth of availability and whether there’s a good fit for your particular need. The database is updated regularly as new vehicles and equipment are identified.

Did you know? If you’re looking for a hybrid-electric transit bus or a natural gas refuse hauler, there are more than a dozen available options for each.

Please note that, with new offerings continuously rolling out, neither the document nor database are absolutely inclusive. We welcome your help alerting us to new offerings or model changes.
